Tucked away on the second floor of aSan Francisco Edwardian, this cloffice (a hybrid closet-office) was originally configured for creative-director work. As professional demands evolved over the years, the desk and computer no longer served the space—it was time to transition fully into a dedicated dressing room. The compact footprint demanded vertical storage optimization toward the high ceilings, and furniture scale needed to remain small without compromising comfort. From preferred hangers to expandable shoe shelving, every detail of this refined renovation is shared below.

The wardrobe and new décor bring abundant color to the space: walls are painted in Benjamin Moore’s warm White Dove, serving as the backdrop for a striped settee and dusty blue armchair fromColey Home, alongside a patterned, rose-hued rug from Swedish brandLayeredthat stretches across the room. Coley Home’s customizable offerings made the furniture selection seamless—the chair and settee proved the ideal scale and proportion. Muted drapes were then chosen to gently filter natural light and play a supporting role rather than competing with the outfits on display.

An eclectic inspiration board and a vintage portrait lend the space a welcoming character that extends beyond personal use, creating a warm environment for family gathering at the end of each day.

The IKEA System That Keeps the Wardrobe Organized

Organization follows a seasonal system with a loosely color-coded approach (making the dressing process more intuitive). The chosen framework isIKEA Elvarlistorage, constructed from sturdy aluminum with adjustable clothes rails, and configurable with shoe racks or additional units featuring adjustable feet.

The appeal lies in modularity and flexibility—nothing too permanent, allowing the room to evolve should its purpose change. Dresses and longer garments are always hung, while most other items are folded. Bags are placed on the top shelf. Beyond color sorting, the most frequently worn pieces are positioned front and center for effortless access.

The Impromptu Shoe Display

After adding simple, expandable shelves from Amazonto accommodate additional footwear within the closet’s built-ins, the trim above was repurposed creatively. A curtain rod for hanging shoes wasn’t feasible on plaster walls, so the molding was tested as a resting ledge instead. The shoes balance perfectly—an inventive solution that now reads as fully intentional.

The Essential Hangers

Professional organizers consistently recommendvelvet hangers, and this cloffice follows suit. The preferredmodelcomes in a pack of 30, is available in several colors, and retails for under $20. The slim profile maximizes closet capacity while the velvet surface prevents any slipping—a practical and affordable upgrade.

Current Seasonal Selections

A well-curated closet demands exceptional garments. Current selections lean toward transitional staples that carry seamlessly between seasons: a perfectly weighted blazer fromTailor’s Keep; a utility shirt and wrap skirt fromLan Jaenicke; and parachute pants bySaint Clair Scissors(crafted from an heirloom tablecloth). Each piece strikes a balance of versatility and character. The footwear choice: vintage black Celine heels that complement any ensemble—timeless, yet with a distinctive wink. The same could be said for the interior design style on display.
