When interior designer Alyssa Owens first assessed her client Stephanie Berger’s Brooklyn bedroom, an evident design challenge presented itself: the two windows on the wall where she intended to place Berger’s new king-sized bed were unevenly spaced. Given that the apartment was a rental and structural modifications were not an option, Owens developed a creative solution to minimize the offset windows. Her approach? An abundant arrangement of curtains.
Behind Berger’s Lulu and Georgia bed, Owens installed six sheer curtain panels. When the room was first featured, readers were eager to learn the source of the designer’s colorful pink chiffon drapes. She has since confirmed they were sourced from Etsy vendor Cushions and More. Her rationale was that a lightweight fabric would soften the edges of the room without obstructing natural light to the degree that linen or cotton might.

“It has this luminous, almost liquid quality,” says Owens. “It catches the light, creates a hazy veil around theMarry Ball paintingon the wall, and transforms what could have been awkward windows into a space that feels cocooning.”

The vendor offers an extensive selection of colors and heights, along with the option to customize width. “It made it easy to get the exact look we wanted,” shares Owens. The final order consisted of three pairs (six panels total) rather than the originally planned two sets, to achieve a sumptuous, enveloping effect. Two sets were specified in the color Salmon, one set in the hue Petal, each measuring 122 inches in height and 85 inches in width, finished with a pencil-pleat top, white hooks, and a plain stitched hem. Her professional recommendation: request swatches before committing, as tones can render differently in person.

An additional advantage of selecting colorful curtains over standard white is their effectiveness as a solution when painting isn’t permitted. “They add depth, texture, and color without altering the walls,” notes the designer. Curtains proved to be a versatile design tool throughout the project. In Berger’s office nook, she mounted an ice-blue velvet curtain to the ceiling to delineate it from the dressing area. “It instantly created the feeling of a bespoke walk-in,” she shares. Fabric emerged as this professional’s signature design element.
